SurroundDEAD: Zombie Shooter meets the 3GS Compass.

Handheld Games Corp released one of the first gaming apps to make use of the iPhone 3GS Compass as a controls method.

Gameplay takes the form of a tap-based, accelerometer-controled, first-person shooter.  Your avatar stands surrounded at the center of an vacant city lot and is unable to move other than spinning in place.  Waves of 3D Zombies attack and your job is to shoot them down by tapping.

Gameplay is very basic and similar to many other Zombie survival shooters on the Store.  However, 3GS owners get a little something extra--a chance to show off their compass by selecting "3GS Compass" from the options menu (not selected by default).

Instead of using the accelerometer, this control scheme makes use of the 3GS compass.  The player's avatar faces whichever direction the player is facing; this definitely adds to the gameplay.  On higher levels, you might even find yourself getting dizzy.  All in all, it is pretty impressive to watch the screen turn with you, as if you're actually looking around yourself.

In the iTunes description, the developers have noted that they have plans to update the app with some new features and improvements, including a shotgun upgrade.

If nothing else, the game provides a bit of fun and gives a glimpse into the possible future of iPhone 3GS gaming.   The compass feature is not available on previous generations of the iPhone.
